Castletown Commissioners have declined to comment on a plan to convert a function room in Callow’s Yard into four apartments.

Clerk Eddie Convery pointed out at Monday’s meeting the plan (16/00119/B) had ‘no parking provision’.

Andrew Thomas said: ‘We have opposed planning applications in the past because of limited parking – we should do it again.’

Colin Leather pointed out that when they did so ‘we have got in trouble [with planners] in the past’.

Mr Thomas replied: ‘Are you saying we should not do it because of that? We should write and say there should be parking.’

Mr Leather proposed they do not object to the plan, but there was no seconder.

Mr Thomas proposed recommending planners turn it down because of lack of parking. He was seconded by David Parnell and supported by Dorothy Faragher and Kevin Weir.

As the vote was split, the final decision was made by commissioners’ chairman Alwyn Collister who said they should make ‘no comment’.

Permission was granted last month to a Callow’s Yard plan (15/01286/B) to make two retail units out of one and convert the rear from retail to residential use at 17 and 19 Malew Street. A series of plans to convert Callow’s Yard from retail to residential use in 2014 provoked concerns they would ‘fundamentally alter’ the town.
