Firefighters were called to a roof blaze in Malew Street, Castletown, on Monday night.
The flat roof next to a cooker range flue caught fire.
Crews using a hose reel were able to put out the flames but had to then cut away the timbers and joists which had been burning in the ceiling roof void. They were there for over an hour ensuring that all the fire spread was identified and extinguished.
The fire had started in the roof void after the joists had caught fire from the heat of the flue.
A fire service spokesman said: ‘All chimneys and flues should be regularly cleaned and inspected by competent persons to ensure that they are safe and have been installed correctly.
‘It is also advisable to have a carbon monoxide detector to monitor any build-up of carbon monoxide gas.’
