New Laxey bridge will be ready for TT

Plans for a new £750,000 bridge in Laxey will be submitted to the planning department later this month, possibly by the end of next week.

A spokesman for the Department of Infrastructure said: ‘There isn’t a preferred design at the moment.

‘Subject to approval being granted, the aim is to have the new bridge open in time for this year’s TT.’

It is understood it will be a single span bridge, so there won’t be a supporting pillar in the river, which should reduce the risk of flood damage in future by ensuring the water can flow unimpeded out to sea.

Structural engineer at the DoI, Aidan McCusker said: ‘There are three or four options and we have meetings scheduled with Laxey commissioners and the Regeneration Group before the plans are agreed and submitted.

The DoI is finalising plans for the structure after the old bridge collapsed during last month’s flooding, resulting in a bus going into the river.

Mr McCusker told the radio earlier: ‘One of the things we are finding with all our infrastructure, both in harbours and highways, is that it is all Victorian and has unfortunately been neglected over the years.’
