A poppy banner created as tribute to Manx servicemen and women who lost their lives in the Second World War has been presented to the British Legion.

The banner, hand painted on silk, was designed and made by Betty Hopson, a member of The Guild of Silk Painters IOM, and painted with the help and sponsorship of members of the public, in a project to raise funds for the Royal British Legion in the island.

It commemorates the 501 Manx servicemen and women who gave their lives during the Second World War.

On Remembrance Day it was handed over by the Legion’s county president Steve Rodan SHK at the Sefton Hotel in Douglas.

Artist Betty Hopson was awarded a certificate from the Legion for her work.

She said: ‘A poppy for every one of the fallen has been drawn on to silk, and members of the public were invited to “paint a poppy red” as their own personal tribute.’

Visitors to the Guild’s Sailing into Silk exhibition at the Sailor’s Centre in Peel paid a £1 donation to the British Legion to paint their poppy.

The banner is going on show in a glass case at the Strand Shopping Centre for the Legion’s Poppy Appeal for the public to view their painted poppies.

The Mann050 Friendship Centre has sponsored cards of the banner which will continue to raise funds for the island’s Legion.
