Ian Skelly is Port St Mary’s new commissioner after claiming an overwhelming majority in yesterday’s by-election.

Mr Skelly gained 296 votes. Other candidates were: Sam Rotchell, 91 votes; Michelle Haywood, 60; and Joyce Crook, 39.

The turnout was 38 per cent, which was ‘most encouraging,’ according to commissioners’ chairman Bernadette McCabe.

She added: ‘Clearly, there is an appetite for our local politics.

‘This election day was conducted in an atmosphere of conviviality that reaffirms the closeness and strength of our village.

‘I am delighted to welcome Mr Skelly on to our board and am sure he will be an asset.’

The by-election was called after Rebecca Sinfield stood down when it emerged her name was not on the electoral roll.
