Election fraud trial: sentencing delayed

SENTENCING of three people involved in illegally securing proxy votes in the 2010 Douglas East by-election has been delayed.

Charles Stanley Lewin, 57, of Ballavitchell Road, Crosby, admitted charges of conspiring to secure proxy votes for candidate Kevin Woodford.

Two other defendants, Kerry Louise Rothwell, 26, of Clifton Terrace, Douglas and Gail Rosemary Corrin, 40, of Cronk-y-Berry Avenue, Douglas were convicted of the offence by a jury at the end of a six week trial.

The sentencing was due to take place today (Thursday November 22) but has now been postponed after Lewin disputed elements of the case against him.

Advocates now need to decide if an agreement between the parties can be reached.

Failing that, a so-called Newton hearing may be required to establish the facts so the case can proceed. This would take place before the deemster but without a jury.
