Gum is still a sticky problem

Douglas councillors considered alternative ways to tackle the menace of discarded chewing gum after a campaign to address the issue earlier this year showed little effect.

The campaign in May and June was run in parallel with a similar venture in the UK but did not reinforce the message with chewing gum bins, like those used in the UK. Councillors heard an average of 72 ‘splats’ of gum were cleaned up in each of the three months from May to July, despite the campaign. Concern was expressed about cigarette end litter and councillors thought wardens should target commercial buildings around Strand Street to address this.
