Island Scout Association commissioner Guy Thompson is an inspiration to the movement’s young members and adult volunteers.

During his two years in charge, he has changed the face of Manx Scouting – overseeing the biggest growth in its membership in living memory.

Numbers have risen by nearly 9 per cent, to just under 950.

Now his commitment to the island’s young people has earned him a nomination for a Pride in Mann award, in the spirit of youth/schools category.

Guy, a chartered buildings surveyor who lives and works in Port St Mary, has been nominated by Scout volunteer Alicia Corlett.

She said: ‘Scouting gives young people opportunities to make new friends, have adventures and challenge themselves.

‘Since taking over his role two years ago, Guy has completely changed the face of Manx Scouting and in doing so has seen the Association grow by 8.6 per cent which is the largest growth it has had in living memory.

‘This year, the Isle of Man Scout Association has grown from 873 to 948 young members. Guy has done what nobody thought was possible.

‘He is 100 per cent for the young people and he gives all his time and support to his volunteers. Guy is a huge inspiration to me and many other volunteers within the Isle of Man Scout Association.’

Guy, who was a Scout himself as a child and whose son Jay is a Scout leader, said he was delighted to be nominated but insisted that the nomination should be for all the adult leaders.

He said: ‘The Scout Association Isle of Man is the largest co-educational youth organisation in the island with nearly 1,000 young people and leaders.

‘Our sections are made up of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Network covering the ages between six and 25.

‘These young people are supported by dedicated leaders who work very hard indeed to deliver varied and exciting programmes and this nomination to me is a reflection of all the work our leaders do for this great charity.’

Pride in Mann is an awards scheme from Isle of Man Newspapers and the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company that recognises unsung heroes who have made a difference to their local community or to the Isle of Man as a whole.

Nominations have now closed. You can read all about each nomination by visiting our Pride in Mann website at prideinmann.com
