FIREFIGHTERS turned out in force this morning (Monday) after an alarm and automatic sprinkler system was triggered at the Manx Gas terminal at South Quay in Douglas.

A total of seven fire engines from Douglas and Laxey answered the alarm sounded just after 9am automatically alerting teams at the central emergency control room.

The call proved to be a false alarm as there was no fire or gas leak.

Station officer John Bellis of the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service said a leak in the water system appeared to have tripped the alarm and there had been no threat to public safety.

Firefighters remained for 30 to 40 minutes but left once it emerged there was no hazard.

Engineers from Manx Gas were working to repair the leak.
