Show announced with new categories

St John’s Produce Show will take place on Saturday, September 5, with new categories included.

This year’s show will be raising money for two local charities, the Motor Neurone Disease Association (Isle of Man) and Tabitha’s Trust (Child Bereavement Support Charity Isle of Man).

Show secretary John Kneen said: ‘This year we have three new classes in the confectionery section, best lemon drizzle cake, best sandwich cake made by a man, and best cornish pasty.’

Admission to the show is £1 which includes refreshments which will be served until 4.45pm.

The prize presentation will take place at 7pm and will be made by Anne Duggan from the Motor Neurone charity and Victoria Kissack from Tabitha’s Trust.

There will then be an auction of produce at 7.30pm with Lee Cain as auctioneer.

A raffle will include among its prizes, travel for two people and a car with the Steam Packet.

The Millennium Rose Bowl for the best exhibit in the show will be up for grabs as the premier award at the event, along with £25 prize money.

There will be the usual sweets, jams and pickles section with the Percy Guest Memorial Cup, presented by members of his family, and £5 prize money for the winner.

Cups and cash prizes will be on offer for the best jam, best plum jam, best marmalade, best sweet, best pickle and best chutney.

In the confectionery section the best exhibit in the section will receive the Mac-Leod Cup.

Other prizes in this class will go to the best fruit cake, best chocolate cake, best apple plate cake, best soda cake, best potato cake, plain bonnags and fruit bonnags.

A children’s confectionery section will include prizes for best biscuits, best mince pies, best fairy cakes and best shortbread.

In the flowers section the Summer Cup will go to the best exhibit and there will also be cups for best roses, best gladioli, best chrysanthemums and best asters.

The exhibitor gaining most points in the vegetable section will scoop the AFC Silver Cup.

Amongst the wide range of categories with prizes on offer for vegetables will be trophies for pumpkins, marrows, rhubarb, leeks and turnips.

In the photography section there will be awards for best colour print of sporting action, best colour print with humorous caption and colour print taken by an under 15.

The top photography prize will be the Wirral Manx Society Shield along with £10 cash for the best exhibit in the section.

There will be plenty for children too with the Perkin Cup on offer for the best art exhibit and categories for handmade cards, craft, decorated potatoes and collages.
