A sponsored swim, the Maughold Head Challenge, has been held at the Northern Swimming Pool in Ramsey.

The event raised £3,450 for the Manx Muscular Dystrophy charity with the Manx Youth Games swimming team also donating £224.

The Youth Games team normally pay £1 a week to train and then use the money for a pool party, but decided they would put it to better use.

Each participant had 10 weeks to complete 172 lengths of the pool, which is the equivalent of the 2.75 miles Maughold Head walk.

Overall 56 people took part in the sponsored swim and there have been some stragglers so an additional £145 has been received after the cheque was presented.

Organiser Alison Barr said: ‘This was a huge community event and a bigger success than imagined.

‘The Northern Swimming pool manager and team were fabulous in helping to make this all happen. We used great facilities, more people used the pool than normal at that time of year. ‘Some participants created their own personal challenge for fitness, raising awareness of muscular dystrophy, and raising funds for charity.’
