Work is to be undertaken to repair weather damage done to Peel promenade last week.
Heavy overnight rain on Thursday July 16 was the culprit for the damage which lifted paving stones and decorative brick work on the promenade near to the refreshments kiosk on Peel seafront.
A spokesman for the government’s Department of Infrastructure, in charge of civil engineering projects, said the water would normally have discharged through the manhole covers but instead had gone underneath the paving slabs lifting them out of position.
The DOI has been working with the Manx Utilities Authority to find the cause of the problem before repair work starts.
A spokesman said: ‘The Drainage Operations Section will rectify the problem by laying regulating courses in engineering brick with a concrete surround along this part of the promenade.’
The damage is the latest in a series of incidents in which adverse weather has affected coastal areas. Last autumn a large hole opened up in Castletown near to the old grammar school. In January 2009 the Victorian lighthouse at the entrance to Port St Mary harbour was washed away in a storm. The land mark had been there since the breakwater was built between 1882 and 1886 and has not been replaced.
