Over the last two weekends Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from across the island have been busy at different sectional events.
After the Cubs’ annual five-a-side football tournament the beavers had their annual sports day.
At the same time scouts were up at the Archallagan Plantation having an orienteering completion.
More than 60 Cub Scouts (girls and boys aged eight to 10½) competed in their annual five-a-side football tournament in St John’s last week.
Many groups entered two teams making a total field of 16 teams from 11 cub packs.
Colin Brew, one of the event’s organisers, said: ‘This is definitely the most teams I think we’ve ever had.’
Colin is Cub leader of the Cushag Cub Pack at 1st Douglas.
‘In the last few years we’ve had on average 10 teams. I’ve had to really adjust the fixtures to try to fit the games needed.’
Second Onchan’s Manannan ‘A’ team beat their Manannan ‘B’ team in the final, while 3rd Peel’s ‘A’ team beat 2nd Onchan’s Snaefell team in the 3rd place playoff.
On Sunday the Beavers held their annual sports day in Tromode.
The 75 Beaver Scouts (aged six to eight) competed in a series of running races, egg and spoon races, sack races and many more fun races.
On what turned out to be a glorious day numerous parents, grandparents, younger brothers and sisters went along to watch and cheer everyone on.
Voirrey Larkin was one of the parents there to cheer her son Aiden, aged six, and the rest of the 1st Santon Beavers.
‘He’s loving it. Aiden’s dad and uncle were both in Scouts. I was never was in Guides or Scouts and feel I missed out.
‘Our middle child, who is four in November, can’t wait to join. He gets upset when he can’t stay.’
Franklin Gould, aged seven, has been a beaver at 5th Douglas for two years now.
‘Beavers is really fun,’ he said. ‘And I enjoy having fun with my friends today.’
Fifth Douglas went on to take second place.
The overall winners were the team from 2nd Onchan’s Thursday Beavers (2nd Onchan also has a ‘colony’ that meets on Tuesdays).
This is the fifth consecutive year that they have won the sports shield, which they will display at the 2nd Onchan headquarters for the next year.
All colonies received certificates for taking part.
Also on the same day a group of sea scouts (aged 10½ to 14) from 3rd Peel were following the Archallagan orienteering course.
Many groups did the course recently, but these scouts were not able to attend, as it was Father’s Day, so completed the course on Sunday.
Part of the Scout Orienteering Activity Badge requires that you compete in three organised competitions.
The Archallagan course was the second competition and another is planned for September.=
