A COLLECTION of clocks and watches from the estate of the late island-based master horologist Dr George Daniels CBE will go under the hammer at Sotheby’s today (Tuesday).
The 130 lots are conservative estimated to fetch £5 million.
Dr Daniels, who moved to the island in 1982 and died in November last year at the age of 85, has been described as the father of modern day horology. He battled for 20 years to gain recognition for his invention of the co-axial escapement which was eventually adopted by Omega which now uses the system across its range.
The most sought after items from his personal collection that goes on sale at Sotheby’s will be the pocket watches he made from scratch. One of these, the Grand Complication, is estimated to fetch £800,000.
